Healthy Emotional Rollercoaster

As human beings, we have a wide range of emotions that are available for the choosing at any time of the day. Think of the emotions that you go through every day: disappointment and frustration when your alarm goes off, satisfaction and calmness during a shower, excitement when you get to work (Right? Right? No…), anger at your incompetent business partner, love toward your kids, etc.

We have a plethora of emotions and sensations to choose from and we only try to feel a few: happiness, satisfaction, etc. What about the others? Sadness? Anger? Fear? We try to avoid those as much as we can.

However, there are benefits to feeling those emotions and going through the experiences that lead to those emotions. For example:

Fear helps boost your adrenaline which will help exercise your heart. It can also help you become more careful when you approach these situations again later. When you watch a scary movie, you are more likely to act safe afterwards (checking your backseat for strangers, double-checking that your doors are locked, etc.)

Dealing with sad situations often makes you more susceptible to strong connections with other people. You can relate to each other and there is a strong bond with someone who is consoling you.

Difficult situations which make you angry can test your virtues. This will only strengthen the ones that you believe in the most. If you believe yourself to be a virtuous person, you must analyze what you do when people make you angry.

These situations make us stronger. Have you heard the phrase “That which does not kill you makes you stronger”? It is true because you learn from those situations and you take that knowledge with you for the rest of your life.

It is true that being happy, optimistic, and laughing often will help you live your life to the fullest. They will also help you enjoy your life. However, you shouldn’t neglect the negative situations which make you feel uncomfortable, sad, angry, or scared. These things shape your personality.
