Self-Esteem and the Holidays

It is that time again. The holidays. It is often a beloved time as well as one that can feel a little ominous. When it comes to being around our loved ones (whether it’s in person or virtually), we can get a little self-conscious. It is natural and makes sense because we want to ensure that we’re showing off our best selves to the people we care about.

1. Remember to be confident

Confidence exudes an aura of achievement and satisfaction. One of the reasons why we think successful people are happy is because they generally have a lot of confidence in how they hold themselves.

Is there something you’re proud of? Share it with your family and be confident about it. Don’t be ashamed of your passion or the things that make you happy. Your true loved ones will be supportive, even if they don’t fully understand.

2. Embarrassed about bad habits?

You know what a lot of people love? A great comeback story or an underdog story. I am one of these people. Which is why I am no longer ashamed about working out or eating healthy.

When I was younger, I had the ridiculous notion that people would make fun of me if they knew I was working out. My natural disposition was to hold weight in my stomach and hips and I would feel ashamed when I would go running. But you know what? No one cared.

Not only that, but whenever it came up with my family, they were proud of the healthy changes I made for myself.

3. Accepting yourself is the first step

In order for both of the previous tips to work, you’re going to have to be the first person to accept yourself, flaws and all. As soon as I began to accept myself, that is when I started treating myself better. I made better choices. I was happier. I was no longer ashamed of my “weird” personal and professional accomplishment.
